Carpet Shampooer vs Carpet Steamer

by Rachel

The argument over which method is better for cleaning carpets is tantamount to attending a sporting match between two competing athletes. This is one of those subjects that appear which challenges a definitive answer. Both corners have their preference and personal experience to support their claims. Basically it boils down to the person you talk to.

Most agree that only steam is classified as deep cleaning. All the others are considered “light” surface cleaning. This is because those methods are not able to remove soil and dirt deep in the pile. Do-it-yourself shampooers and even professionals sometimes leave behind large amounts of cleaning solution greatly contributing to resoiling, by literally acting as “dirt magnets.”

One do-it-yourself shampooer, however, has an inexpensive formula for making your own shampoo. Poor into a bucket 2 cups isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, 1 cup white distilled vinegar, 1 tablespoon ammonia, 1 teaspoon dish soap (bleach and alkaline free). The alcohol speeds up the drying process, while the dish soap helps engage the wetting action of the shampoo. Add three quarts hot water; mix gently, but thoroughly. Fill a spray bottle with some solution for pre-treating. Use with a rental steamer if you like.

Carpet Steamer

Steam cleaning is also referred to as Hot or Warm Water extraction. Shaws Industries, which boasts to be the largest carpet manufacturer in the country, recommends this type of cleaning. They and other individuals warn of problems with abused and poorly maintained rental equipment, possibly responsible for over wetting and yellowing, fiber tip damage, severe resoiling, and overuse of detergents.

“Chem-Dry,” a division of The Home Depot, claims to take steam cleaning to a new level. They report that conventional steam cleaning is a thing of the past. What makes them unique is their patented hot water extraction that uses an “active” process called carbonation, allowing for deep cleaning and a rapid drying time, in about two hours. They use a truck-mounted system and a carbonating cleaner utilizing a low pressure application that creates millions of micro bubbles which lift the dirt and grime to the surface for easy extraction. Chem-Dry is safe and non toxic, uses less water with a neutral PH. They are endorsed by Shaw, Mohawk and Residential Industries.

Conclusion

In conclusion, doing one’s homework would seem to be the rule of thumb. As for professionals, cheaper is definitely not always better. Some companies have large employee turnover and/or poor technical training. Ask for references and guarantees. For the do-it-yourselfer, know what cleaning agents you’re using and how to use them and be certain the equipment used is safe and in optimum condition.
